Once Upon A Studio Review


For the 100 anniversary of Disney they realised Once Upon A Studio a love felt short combining over 500 of there most popular characters all in one short. It follows the characters on a journey to take a group photo as you can imagine 500 characters trying to take a photo with Opposite characteristics has its challenges.

 

It focuses still on the most infamous character Mickey Mouse and his friend Minnie Mouse but in a heartfelt homage to the founder of Disney Walt Disney Mickey find a picture of him and glances at it with a fondness and loving way, I feel it creates a sense of magic throughout the short creating a heartfelt and emotive story during the whole short. 

 

It also combines different styles of animation which is such an unique contrast to other shorts/films they’ve produced in the past which gives it a feeling of togetherness even though the styles don't typically match each other. The way in which the characters actually appear on screen in a really lively and bouncy way following the style and charteristics of said character when there introduced.

 

Fundamentally the best part of the short has to be the final scene with them trying to get the photo and them really struggling it is nice that they play homage the old days of cinema by getting Mickey Mouse to use a old cinema camera to take the photo but of course things don't go to plan. Also the symbolism of the photo being taken outside the entrance of walt Disney animation studios is really cute and reminiscent of the companies history. The whole short is actually filmed inside the actual current day animation studio which is the alive embodiment of the company's history and future of Disney's success and growth within or publicly.

Blog 3 Aesthetic Research for Script to Screen

I enjoyed this phase of the project more. I find the research and writing most challenging so focus on the production and creative side suits me best. I also enjoyed exchanging ideas with the rest of the group even when it pushes me out of my comfort zone at times. For my aesthetic research, I focussed on similar TV shows and films which shared a similar aesthetic and style to our own vision for the film. I took a number of screenshots, visited local pubs and restaurants in Maidstone and in London to identify the type of location that best caters to the look and feel of our film.  I really liked the natural sound in the Groundhog day scenes and researched sound to better understand how sound is recorded for dialogue scenes and which equipment would work best to achieve the sound. Blog 5 Final Evaluation for Script to Screen

What went well? Overall, this project has gone well from a personal perspective. Right from the start, the group aspect went well. We were each set clear roles, for which I was able to prepare. I was able to communicate my thoughts and ideas to the director and he always took my feedback into consideration which helped build my confidence and kept me feel a member of the project team. I feel I was able to develop my research skills in this project. I found it especially interesting to research similar tv shows/ films and this helped me choose an aesthetic style to replicate for our own film.  I spend quite a lot of time looking into how different shot types are achieved, what specialist shot types there are and what equipment is used. This helped me put together a plan for the shooting day.  I was well prepared for all group meetings and did better with meeting timescales.
